The (Need of The) Mind or Body? Tool

“The needs of the mind are not the needs of the body. If the need for food is in the mind, if the need for sex is in the mind, you cannot satisfy the need.”—Don Miguel Ruiz

One of the main things which happens with unconscious behaviour is the confusion between the needs of the mind and the needs of the body.

Most commonly, judgement in the mind causes the unconscious mind to hijack the needs of the body and claims its own need is a need of the body.  For example, the mind may be in fear and so want to be entertained by eating food, pretending that the body is hungry when really it isn’t.

This is the main cause of the global obesity crisis – people are ‘eating their emotions’ and their fears.

Or maybe the other way round, the mind is saying we must exercise, but actually the body doesn’t want to right now.

Of course, we don’t want to go into judgement of this, or as we now know we don’t shift or heal anything!  But we do want to start by gaining a clean awareness of whether something is actually a genuine need of the body, or merely a need of the mind.  And if it is a need of the mind, another good question is to ask what the body actually wants.

The (Need of The) Mind or Body? Tool: “Is this a need of the mind or a need of the body?  If it is a need of the mind, what does the body really want right now?  What does the mind really want right now?  Would I let it go of any judgement that wouldn’t allow me to honour any of those?”
